I think sex scenes can and should be character moments. A woman abused early in her adolescents regains her emotional and sexual validation by having sex with the man she actually chose and enjoys it thoroughly. A man who was a emotionally and socially dead person inside opening up and showing his most vulnerable side for a few minutes before receding back into a rude brute that takes the reins. If it's just too people going at it then it's the equivalent of watching two people smile at each other for an awkward amount of time.
