My memory is muddy, how did anyone win a run in the early days when nobody was doing the gaol meta? Did we just do everything on the map besides gaols?

May someone please give a non-spoiler hint as to how to get Revenant? I'm at the penultimate Nightlord before Aspect, and I've done lots of rememberances, but don't have Revenant.
