WoW puts a lot of effort into interacting with the world. Instead of one MSQ quest that leads you to a point and somewhere else you often get like 3-5 quests from a hub and they make you beat the shit and collect stuff out of an area. That alone creates gameplay variation, forces you to interact with the environment and leaves more of an impression of the area. You dont just go in to trigger a cinematic and then instantly fuck off.
Its also not part of the epic mainstory but rather many short bursts of quests with unique characters and settings. Best of all? Many are optional. If you dislike it for whatever reason just go somewhere else.
FF14 has the yellow quests for stuff like that but they arent really fleshed out and they are also so unrewarding that nobody bothers with them anyways.

And funny enough WoW was at its worst when it forced a linear MSQ with Shadowlands too.
Let the people roam, man. Both games call me adventurer so let me actually walk off the beaten path for fucks sake.

But its not just that. ARR zones felt more natural and lived in compared to later ones.
I think a big difference now is that the maps in FF14 because very wide and now you can walk around any possible threat. The previous density felt nicer. And you had the basic hunting logs that actually made you beat up shit along the way.
