Judgments of Roman writers

Diodorus around 30 BC to 20 AD reports in his Universal History (XXXIV, 1) that the friends of King Antiochus (175-163 BC) had advised him to completely exterminate the Jewish people, "for they alone among all nations did not want to mix with any other people and regarded everyone as enemies." After being expelled from Egypt, they settled in the region of Jerusalem and "united into the one people of Jews, inheriting hatred against humanity among themselves." Therefore, they also displayed entirely different customs: "They would not enjoy the same food as any nation, and they were not at all inclined towards anyone." They (the king's friends) also reminded him of "the hatred that the ancestors had against this people." They pointed to the "misanthropic and unjust ordinances" that were contained in the "holy books" of the Jews…

Seneca 4 BC to 65 AD: "The customs of this most wicked people have already grown so strong that they have spread in all countries; the conquerors have been imposed upon by the defeated. " Seneca philosophus ed. Bipont. 1782. Vol. IV, p. 423.
