Reminder that he was only called butz in a screenshot on the back of the box. It was just the name that dev who took the screenshots had called him.

Ok I bothered to look up a bit more.
Turns out the ONLY source of the name Bartz/Butz/Battsu was a screenshot on the back of the box. Some people took it to be his name.
The PSX version began using the name in the manual, but it didn't become his default name until the GBA version. It's likely that it wasn't Square's initial intention when they released the game but eventually rolled with it.
