I like to pick the bases to either contrast with the paint scheme (more visually interesting) or match what environment you’d see the mech or the camo in. For example, on my Snow Ravens I went with a red sand base because it contrasts well against the teal (blue-green and red-orange are opposite sides of the color wheel), but the opposite direction (a snow or ice base) would probably look just as good.
For a lance of urbanmechs I might go with just painting road markings on the base; you’d expect to see urbanmechs in a city anyway, and it doesn’t require you to buy a bunch of flocking/glue/texture pastes/basing bits right away.
