When in doubt, just assume that Season 1 to 2 Rick was the best one. He set the gold standard for what the audience generally likes to see from him. And personally, a limited Rick who still possesses an internalized humanity that he doesn't always share with others makes for the best episodic and long term plots. Back in the day, Rick having his share of stupid fuckups and vulnerabilities was funny; he fucked up fixing the Cronenberg situation and he had plenty of moments where running from the current threat was the best option.
