No. Episode 7 was a palate cleanser and a complete nothingburger. You can say that JJ Abrams blew up the Republic, but that's not true. TLJ could have opened with the New Republic fleet striking back against the First Order. It's Rian Johnson who decided to do more Rebels vs Empire, even though he could have easily bent TFA's lore into something more interesting. It's Rian Johnson who decided to make Luke a hermit.
Back in high school, I wrote an alternative TLJ treatment, and what I would have done is basically make the film a hunt for Snoke, basically an inverse of TESB. So, Poe and Finn and the gang would be chasing down the First Order. In the meantime, Rey would join Luke's quest to uncover ancient Force secrets, and they would travel to multiple planets looking for Jedi ruins. The reason he had a map leading to him was because he was actively searching for something ancient. My TLJ would have ended with the Knights of Ren ambushing Rey and bringing her to Snoke. She would then join Kylo on the Dark Side.
