Think about it, everybody calls him a zombie, he's completely dysfunctional in the real world, HE'S FUCKING BLUE AND RED IN THE DARK WORLD when nobody else is significantly different. The mural says he's "a cage with human parts" implying he's not human, only partly human, so WHATEVER THE FUCK happened to Kris that Gaster'd Dess and made Noelle repress teh memories also split Kris into pieces.
Somebody put his ass back together wrong and made whatever the fuck the Knight is.
Toriel is certainly involved because Carol doesn't talk to or trust her and knows she was involved somehow. Asgore knows something happened but doesn't see the whole picture.
The only thing that makes sense being the knight is so similar to Kris,l is that he IS Kris, the original, using parts of our vessel. And our Kris is also a mishmash almagam of vessel and Kris parts.
Bonus points, Asriel's not in college, he's in therapy or the hospital as a result of whatever the fuck happened which explains why he didn't come back for summer vacation. Toriel told everybody he went to college, but really he's in therapy or a lony bin like Kris and assumedly Noelle was.
