It depends what you mean by story game. If you mean the kind of thing where the players improv random shit like in your example then I'd be surprised if that lasts. It's explicitly for hipsters who want the appearance of gaming without any of the work that goes into things like learning rules, writing or reading modules etc. I've never heard of that hanging together longer than a session or two. "I don't want to make effort" isn't a good basis for keeping a group going given that dping so requires, you know, effort.
Doesn't help that a lot of the games in that genre tend to be mid at best, and railroadey and unpleasant to play at worst.
In terms of campaigns which tell a story I'd say that's the norm, especially in systems like 2nd ed dnd an epic story was expected and I find sandbox games (Go to this area and fix random problems) very dull without some sort of narrative.
