I couldn't find any data to back this up, actually. The average income in the US when you factor out the top 0.1% is around $60k, not $35k. And the top 0.1% is 330k people, not just 1k.
Mind you, this is income. The tranny is probably arguing about wealth, and wealth is something entirely different. You can have negative wealth if you have too many loans, and wealth includes intangible assets like stocks and bonds that cannot be 1-for-1 liquidated. They're not exactly fungible money you can use to buy a cheeseburger.
