traditional miners pasties used any leftovers from their meals the night before (could be literally anything), then put into thick pastry because it kept together and would stay hot for 12-24 hours iirc, and they are shaped that way specifically because miners would put them in their overall pockets to use them as hot water bottles until they ate them. The pastry was nothing more than a disposable container.
