well yes it's likely the mantle itself and that's likely a collar shape but it's also being anthropomorphized (or whatever the equivalent term would be for 'making animal-like or monster-like') such that those same shapes *become* ears or horns. Like I doubt the mantle itself has a mouth normally but who knows? It's kinda like the whole darkner thing in general, though, right? the Shadow Mantle could just be a plain-ass coat Dess or someone used to wear that has become both an important, powerful item and an at least temporarily living entity in the Dark World... or SWORD game... or something.
