M3gan's budget was around 12 million, 2.0's budget is between 15-25 million, so they didn't go FULL retard by throwing a stupid amount of money at the film, it's still a really modest budget and it still looks great, hell the CGI looked better than what Marvel has been doing since Endgame. Plus the original film's box office has already paid for both films production twice over.
I think what they may not have thought about in regards to the difference in box office between the two is how many people went to see the original and left disappointed. The general consensus was that it was a solid film but painfully bloodless, so they released the "unrated" version on home media. So it might be a case of the first M3gan just didn't create a large enough fan base.
That said I loved the new movie and I really hope the franchise continues. Action or horror, sprinkle the comedy in there and I'll keep going at least until the franchise hits Terminator Genysis levels of bad.
