I did my part by posting on Facebook for the first time in years to shill it. I even specifically said the marketing didn't do it justice.

I just got back from watching it. I liked it a lot. The pivot away from horror and into action might put people off, understandably, but I didn't really mind. I just enjoyed seeing M3gan doing M3gan things again on the big screen. She's really cute and bratty in this one, pretty much everything you'd want to see from her if you like her a lot. Her singing, dancing, the little hair-toss type commentaries she makes, etc, M3gan's just really entertaining and endearing to watch. Without spoiling anything, quite a few things M3gan did got some real cheers and excited screams in my theater

One thing I'd have liked to see more of though was more M3gan and Cady interactions. They had some very sweet moments together, I just wish there were more of them. I think M3gan's attention was stretched in too many directions in the movie, which is why she couldn't spend as much time with Cady. I didn't like how M3gan was taller this time either, but I get why it was done. It would have looked way off if M3gan was so much shorter than Cady, since Cady got taller too between the two movies. M3gan would have looked like Cady's little sister if they kept her the same height

The way Amelia moves is very reminiscent of Robocop (though more graceful). Weller based the way Robo moves on the idea that Robocop's "brain" is actually in his chest, so he moves his chest to whatever direction he is going first, then his head. Amelia does the same, like in the sever room early on, she moves the gun, then torso and finally head as she turns.
I also liked the horror references in her movement, like her Sadako crawling out of the suitcase, or the vaguely stop-motion spider-like crawl down the pipes during the prologue.

Every time she fights a crowd she gets overwhelmed and loses. That's why I mentioned she forces the one on one when she can. Her style is more using the environment to her advantage and running away while picking a few off. Or she has superior fire power allowing her to win. The one time she fights a lot of enemies solo is when she arrives at that town. There she loses and is overwhelmed pretty quickly once they catch up to her. Reeves is charming because he's a nice guy, but he's not a great actor.

They said her programming is based on Megan 1.0. Cady just pushed the Megan settings to the front because it still had the "protect Cady" command. My idea would be to take what the first M3GAN movie did, where all her victims were unsympathetic and escalate it by taking a page out of the Toxic Avenger's book and making her victims completely irredeemable the next time around. I think it could be argued that she had sustained enough damage that it had affected her programming and might have M3gan bypass the code to protect Cady, but the films also very much establish that M3gan's AI very much behaves like true intelligence, she thinks and feels and can grow and learn beyond her original parameters. Even parents have murdered their own children out of love because they are experiencing something traumatic. It might not make rational sense, but within their own logic it works. Turning it into an action movie was a mistake. How much nonstop cape action movies comes out per year, or Mission Impossible #20492, or whatever else? Action movies are wildly oversaturated. Murderous robololi chopping people apart with a paper guillotine and doing spontaneous entertaining dance routines, is very unique. That was the allure of it. Removing that initial appeal caused some pretty severe damage. Nobody would have wanted Child's Play 2 to feature Chucky jumping out of planes to do infiltration missions. If you really like Chucky's character, then sure, you'll see it just to see him, but it wouldn't be your first, or even second choice for things you'd want him to be doing

Bigger context for being invisible is Disney bought Fox after Alita came out, and because Alita wasn't a huge smash hit Disney didn't prioritize a sequel compared to Avatar, which keeps making billions for them. And normies have short memories nowadays if they don't a sequel soon. There's no saying if Cameron has the time to produce an Alita sequel, if he's interested, when he has to direct Avatar for the rest of the decade.

At least Blumhouse has more to lose by throwing the towel at M3gan, they swapped her January release date with a Wolfman remake that flopped, and now I have to wonder about the Black Phone sequel. At least that comes out in October.
