This is only a good idea if the characters are established members of the cast. In the case of a 'decoy love interest', this does not happen.
There's nothing wrong with character studies into why characters do or do not work together. The issue arises when a character exists solely for the sake of being a romantic object of affection for another. If the love interest is a female, they risk being flat and entirely unrelateable to the female audience. If the love interest is male, they risk being incredibly boring and coming across as a cockblock to the audience or main male character (i.e. Paul in Spider Man).
