Gen 1 and 2 are really rough, gen 2 always turns into stall hell on mid to high ladder, gen 1 is way too janky, broken and limited, very few Pokemon actually have the tools to do what they need and matches WILL turn into freeze and generally just RNG fishing, you will experience pure misery if your luck isn't very good.

Gen 3 is a great generation, not stally, not too fast either, a ton of stuff works, it's arguably the most balanced Pokemon ever was, even a bunch of shitters like Camerupt, Roselia and other Hoenn mons cursed with being SLOW. FRAIL. MIXED ATTACKERS. are viable with the right teams, you just need to keep the mainstays of the meta in mind and keep in mind good prediction and properly taking your turns is going to become your main priority.
>Gen 4
Gen 4 is miserable, only gen 4 UU and NU were vaguely fun last time I tried them, but barely anyone plays it, so it isn't worth it. Nuke moves, poor balancing decisions and especially Stealth Rocks drag things down really hard compared to ADV, gen 4 OU is plainly terrible, Jirachi and Latias run and ruin the tier, Jirachi is so broken that it can 1v1 Heatran through sheer bullshit, Latias just melts everything, gen 4 OU also has by far some of the most insufferable faggots on smogon, so keep that in mind.
>Gen 5
Can be fun, but there's a few Pokemon that make matches miserable, namely Volcarona, Reuniclus and a few others, I don't remember if Latios was banned or not, but it was also painfully miserable to deal with last time I played OU. It's honestly a fun generation with a ton of stuff that, but there's also a lot that will make your days miserable, I recommend trying gen 5 at least.
>Natdex
Natdex is pretty fun, plenty of stuff to try and unlike other councils, the Natdex council tends to ban bullshit outright a lot of the time instead of letting it fester and ruin the tier like say, gen 9 OU. But again, like in gen 5, there's some absolute bullshit roaming around OU and UU.

I think one of the simplest changes that could make Decidueye go from painfully mediocre to at least usable if gimmicky was giving it Quick Draw as an ability, it makes sense.
