Crossovers have been a thing for a while, but they've never been tournament legal. They were "just for fun" little things you could collect and have.

However, starting literally right now, with the Final Fantasy crossover, they've become standard legal. Why? Because WotC knew FF would be the most successful crossover they've ever printed, and wanted people who bought them to start playing the actual game and get hooked on that whole hamster wheel.

This also means every crossover is standard legal going forward. Which a lot of the established community hates by the way. But they will get pushed out by all the new players coming in to play Sephiroth and Venom. This is the game now.
