There's actually plenty of examples of horses being left for dead across the world and surviving fine on their own. It's just the hyper specialized horses like Thoroughbreds and various show horses that are delicate.
Pic related. Chincoteague ponies that got left for dead across the east coast of the US that survived just fine. Hokkaido Pony is another example of this as they were horses left on Hokkaido by Korean Fishermen but they ended up surviving too. Mustangs, etc. Even Brazil has their own horses that just vibe in the wilderness.
