Okay, I give up, what's the synergy? Why those? Are they suddenly THAT good for defenses for some reason?

Can i do the "one planet challenge" with broken ring?
I know it's technically up to 4 planets, but still.
What would a good layout be? megacorp? Virtual machines? Or going for pisonics and an organic race?
