I knew that was bullshit from the beginning.
I started today and played like 3 hours or so and I'm only just now leaving the Lagoon area (the first full level). Not even going for 100% yet either, just whatever I can find that looks interesting.
It's just fun as fuck to be able to climb anywhere you want and smash anything you want, and find secrets and stuff. Some of the 3-banan challenges are tricky too, I had to experiment a bunch and use a lot of balloons before I figured out where the final banan was.
