If we're talking theories, a lot of this is just extrapolation headcanon fanfic shit but I think this might be the rough outline of what happened if the Sword Route game is a partial retelling of the past and Noelle was involved with the Shelter
>Kris and Dess used to be friends who played make believe together, Kris is aware of the Dark Worlds before chapter 1
>The "original game" is violent and has you going around killing enemies to level up while Tenna's game takes away all those elements, in the Dark Worlds you visit you can't normally kill enemies
>Extrapolation: Kris and Dess used to go on Dark World adventures and those adventures were violent which is how Kris got so powerful
>Noelle was a crybaby as a little kid, someone who Dess was always looking out for and Kris was giving scares to, and someone who (headcanon extrapolation begins here) Kris may have resented a little for taking so much of Dess's attention
>How to make Noelle into less of a weakling? Bring her to a Dark World where she can Become stronger, perhaps Kris and Dess did this together but I'd guess Kris did this by themselves to try and toughen Noelle up so Dess wouldn't care so much anymore and Dess came in for the save later
>That Dark World was the Shelter because the Pointed Tail told Kris and/or Dess it was the best place to do this, but it turns out it's hell
>Noelle keeps getting told to attack and cast spells to protect herself from all the FRIENDs and whatever but she can't because she's a crybaby, until Dess gets caught or hurt or sacrifices herself or whatever and she casts a really big one that turns things from bad to worse, thus the Forbidden Path begins with Ice Magic leading to our current scuffed team with Susie in it
>Alternatively Noelle gets way more into it than Kris thought she would and together they stumble onto something really, really bad that neither of them can fight, Dess saves them but is LOST, Noelle is traumatized further into helplessness etc.

Are the FRIENDs in Ralsei's Darkner lecture, the ERAM boss fight and the Battat minigame in the DEVICE file category? I know that they're listed as spr_ like the other normal characters instead of DEVICE_FRIEND or IMAGE_FRIEND at least
