What's interesting is that, after turning Super, the emeralds should disperse right? So if Sonic turned Super at the end of Sonic 2, then those emeralds dispersed throughout Westside Island again, and Sonic and Tails had to collect them again for the intro of S3&K to happen.

Now of course back then the whole deal with the emeralds wasn't properly established until SA1. But technically there's a second adventure between Sonic and Tails between Sonic 2 and Sonic 3&K we never got to see

A more boring adventure since Eggman was already defeated but still. It could explain why Tails invented that emerald radar mentioned in Sonic 3's JP manual
