GRW and BP are pretty much standout examples of how Ubisoft can't ever feel the need to commit to anything that would uproot the open world formula. The mechanics, the basics, the design- everything is there for a tactical stealth ops shooter, but most of your time is driving around cramped rural roads and empty regions if you don't take a chopper, then you crouch and prone and shoot some dudes for stealth or pop a guy loud and see the rest of the area funnel in through a chokepoint, rinse and repeat.

The devs clearly WANT to keep doing what Advanced Warfighter / Future Soldier did with tactical gameplay but dumbed it down so much that your AI companions just run around and auto-shoot when sync shots aren't used, and tactics boil down to basically "it's Far Cry but you die really fast at the high difficulties" so it doesn't get enough to diversify itself besides gun autism and pseudo-tactical shit. Like it has cool bursts and then you realize it's incredibly vapid. And meanwhile all the controls and mechanics are so unrefined that it feels like a AA shooter that happened to get the patented Ubisoft Open World™ with nothing to really show for it but the usual checklists. Fucking Division has better shooting and movement controls. And if you do it without friends, nothing feels interesting or cohesive.

I really hope either Ubisoft shitting the bed makes them revisit proper mission structure and design again in their games, or they just lose the IP to someone that will do it. Open world design sucked for MGSV, it sucked for Ghost Recon, and it still isn't really conductive to tactical shooter design when the entire point of tactical design is the intricacy of mission layouts and enemy positions.

Okay, a quick burst of the free trial and this is way more stealth focused than I expected, even if very rudimentary. But boy, the console versions suck being stuck at 30 FPS. Also not sure how to feel about the auto-cover mechanics.
