Hype itself is honestly a huge part of the problem. For some reason too many people always look at things in absolute extremes. Something is either the most amazing thing ever or it's hard garbage. Nobody really seems to be able to process the idea of something just being "reliably good." I hate saying stuff like this because it sounds really dismissive but not every comic is THAT good. Very few are. That's not that they're bad or even, as the zoomies like to say "mid" but something can just be good and enjoyable for a read and that's enough. Part of what makes the big stuff BIG was how you had issues and issues of NORMAL stories to establish the status quo that was about to be changed forever. But people see THIS COMIC WAS GOOD and think "oh boy head is going to explode from the epic."

Well at the end of the day the comics still have to be dependably good. Clear readability doesn't really matter much when the books in question aren't terrific. This is going to sound like a dismissive argument but I really wish comics would understand how to just be reliably good again. This is why Roger Stern is one of my favorite writers. He writes comics to be good, not to shatter the status quo and that's why his books feel better.
