1.) Spain and Portugal: The Visigothic Kingdom was a vassal state within the western Roman Empire that (along with the Basque country) became a rump state during its disintegration in the 5th century AD. It was in turn reduced down to the Kingdom of Asturias by 718 which eventually (in one form or another) conquered all of the Iberian Peninsula by 1492.

2.) Germany and Austria: In 1519 the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Spain were united into a single state under Charles V. as a result Germany and Austria can claim to be a continuation up until 1945 when the Third Reich was conquered by the USA, the USSR, the UK, and France.

3. the Netherlands and Italy: see 2. Their claim ended in the Napoleonic wars.

true but Spain and Portugal also have a legitimate claim to being a direct continuation via the Basque Country and the Visigothic Kingdom which became rump states during the western empire's disintegration:

in turn, these countries were reduced to the rump state of Asturias in 718 which eventually conquered all of Spain by 1492. Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, and Italy were then united under Charles V in 1516.

The Netherlands and Italy then lost their claim to being a direct continuation during the Napoleonic wars and Germany and Austria lost theirs in 1945 so in summary there are really only three successor states in Europe:

- Romania (Trebizond > Theodoro > Wallachia)
- Spain
- Portugal (via the Iberian union 1580-1640)

thankyou for reading.
