>anon fumbles to get on bike
>wobbles ridiculously feet flailing
>chains not even on the thing
>tries standing in dirt dragging upturned bike back on forth on the ground
>holds bike up and runs around making brrrrrmm sound

the PATH of mediation is not entirely about the still mind (which is the fruit), but largely it's a process of ever deepening humility, grace, and refinement in the face of seeing clearly (however difficult) by walking it.
how many times do you think you'll have to look down and take another conscious step ON the path instead of away from it?
how long does it take from sprouting a seed before one can harvest the universes' most delicious peaches? with what kind of care would you handle the sprout and sapling? who would you seek advice from if you wanted abundant and extra tasty peaches?

Most smart people "waste" their intellect and don't contribute much to humanity. Look at Terrence Tao. He is smart as hell but he will never have the impact of older mathematicians who were not as smart but were there at the right place at the right time. Even if he does make a big proof during his lifetime, math is so far ahead of the rest of science that it will be pointless. He could have had a much greater impact if he went into chem, bio, or even physics.
There's also many kinds of "smart". A chess genius might not have ended up being a top scientist if he chose that route. His brain might be wired to be a chess prodigy but not so much to be a researcher.
