It's not silly billy shit. My best friend from high school used to work as a dev at Microsoft and they literally talked about making their software buggy so it would drive user engagement and discussion online. If everything just worked people wouldn't talk about it, but if it requires patches they can drive searches, forum discussion, and overall product promotion. Software is one of the products people will bitch about endlessly but there's only a handful of options so they can do this and get away with it.

Apple does the same thing with their hardware. They recently changed the hold/ring off from a slider switch to a button. People already pointed out how bad and flawed this is, easily gets pressed taking the phone in or out of your pocket or even just picking it up. They'll change it on the next model to something else and promote it as an improvement, when it was an intentional downgrade on these latest phones. Apple does this to promote what they consider "kinship" between their corporate brand and their customers, who feel like "Apple really listens to us, they heard our feedback and made it better!"
