You guys need to stop acting like ANY unserious joke character could secretly be important.
Every time Toby does this trope, the joke character gets serious moments beforehand and there's always hints sprinkled around that there's more going on with them. With Sans you have the Grillby's scene where he warns you about a flower that might be tricking Papyrus and the MTT dinner scene where he straight up tells you he would've killed you if it weren't for his promise with Toriel. With Gerson, he's a war vet who used to train Undyne and is aware in the genocide route that shopkeepers are immune.
I dare you to name a SINGLE UTDR character who was insignificant/comic relief the entire time only for a 180° plot twist that they were actually the most powerful guy ever.
