Geht um einen Akademiker dessen Hauptfach Hitlerstudien sind, der aber nichtmals Deutsch kann, um seine Familie und seinen Freund, ein merkwürdiger Popkultur-Forscher namens Murray. Es ist bislang ein sehr merkwürdiger Roman, alle scheinen verrückt, voller Obsessionen und leicht gestört. Meine bisherige Interpretation ist (ähnlich dem was DeLillo schon in Endzone als Thema hatte), dass DeLillo die Nachkriegsmoderne in den USA als eine Epoche kennzeichnet die von einer tiefen Verunsicherung gegenüber der eigenen Umwelt, sozial, politisch als auch eben der Natur selbst, geprägt ist.
Wie z.B. das Radio oder das Fernsehen dafür sorgen, dass die Menschen ihrer eigenen Wahrnehmung nicht mehr trauen, wie unsichtbare Kräfte, etwa Giftgase, Asbest und dergleichen die Menschen gefährden, wie der akademische Beruf zu einer Art von Hochstaplerwettbewerb geworden ist usw. usf. Es ist schwer zu beschreiben aber es herrscht so eine hochparanoide Stimmung, und das alles wird durch ständige Reflektionen über die Angst vor dem Tod begleitet. Das Resultat aus dieser Verunsicherung/gerechtfertigten Paranoia und der Angst vor dem Tod ist, dass sich die Menschen wie eine Art Kult auf Konsum stürzen, individuell und gemeinschaftlich. Etwa wenn die Ehefrau Babette anordnet, dass jeden Freitag die ganze Familie gemeinsam Fernsehen schaut, weil sie glaubt so ihre Kinder gegen die gehirnzersetzenden Einflüsse des Fernsehens schützen zu können, oder der Protagonist das Einkaufen im Supermarkt als eine der wenigen befreienden Tätigkeiten in seinem Leben empfindet, wie ein Triumph gegen die eigene Sterblichkeit oder wie sein Freund Murray jeden Popkultur-Abfall intellektualisiert um darin irgendeinen Halt zu finden. Die Menschen flüchten sich also in den exzessiven Konsum und in die exzessive Konsumgesellschaft um der inneren Ungewissheit zu entfliehen. Ich weiß, dass sich aber der Hälfte des Buches die Handlung dreht, aber so weit bin ich noch nicht.
