And to give another answer, Christianity started by converting the slaves and the lower classes. It has happened in Russia as well with the neoabrahamic religion communism. The difference being that for the Communists to win over Christianity it took less than a century, while for Christians to win over Paganism it took almost four centuries.
Also Christians took the greatest empire to ever exist and made it a complete shithole, while commies took feudal backwater and made an industrial superpower with a space program out of it.
