How do you think game genres even get created in the first place?
A game genre only comes into existence when enough people make a high amount of ripoff and "-like" games based on whatever the original game was, and this isn't something that magically started when indie games properly began in the 2010s
This shit happened every gen, especially in the 90s - 00s, but instead of calling them "-like" games like we do now, most were just called (x) clones or (x) killer

Mario took the world by storm and all of a sudden, people made games that played similarly to Mario as they had jumping mechanics and collecting shit. So many in fact that Miyamoto originally tried to patent jumping as a mechanic so he can get them all to fuck off.
Sonic is the worst example you could have used since he's the first showcase of making one of those games and showing how effective it can be, Yuji Naka played Mario and thought "I can make this better" and then he made Sonic, but Sonic is still clearly inspired by Mario in its core gameplay, which is why we call it a platformer

Crash is based off Sonic, Rayman is based off Mario, Spyro is based off Mario etc

FPS games weren't called an FPS, they were just DOOM clones or Quake clones. Someone makes an FPS today that plays like CoD and people will call it a CoD-like but when CoD first came out it was advertised as a Medal of Honor killer

The only difference today is there are so many games in existence that we now have sub-genres in a main genre so for Sonic's style we now have a Sonic-like as a sub genre of platformer
