But... a lot of Horror games have male protagonists. If I play Silent Hill 2, I'm a man protecting a woman. You would think all men would want this, but clearly not if they're making games with female leads.

I think that's the minimum they should do. Everyone who bought the game will buy it, so that's easy money compared to a new game.
I won't even mind playing as Maria, and I hate games with a female protagonist. I guess it's different if you like the character.
