Yes we get ourselves into a dead end basically. The second problem is that this also shatters the idea of eternal progress, the idea that society always advance no matter what, if we accept we got ourselves into a dead end means we also have to accept the idea that not all progress is necessary "good" because it could lead to another dead end, which in turn make us more dubious about how to advance society. The only way to leave a dead end is to turn back but how does that work when apply to an entire society? We shall go back 10 years 50 years 200 years. Something can be salvage or nothing can be?
