Because he wants to be close with his family, he doesn't want to be an "other" who's inevitably left behind. He wants to feel like he really belongs, he craves that stability, like all kids do. I think regardless of what happened with Dess and what he's doing about it, he's very depressed that his family is broken and that he's getting neglected by them.
