I don't believe that image was completely serious at all, III was ostensibly a spin-off originally too, but that said:
Ensemble
>ditched AoE I-II's formula but not before making a Star Wars game mostly lifted from II, but has things like shield generators and flying units
>they then built off AoM's foundation for III instead before dying in the ass with HAAH WAAW
Relic
>have made one (1) AoE game so far
>have already developed WWII and sci-fi RTS series in Company of Heroes and Dawn of War, both of which have taken skubby or outright unpopular decisions
So really, we're left with the modern era unchecked in spirit (with a single century seeing so much technological and geopolitical changes nonetheless) but I'd assume it would be too superfluous in the case of Relic, unless they focused on shit being more contemporary. Making it work though? The issue becomes keeping other AoE elements that aren't just 100 workers per player, lest it just turns into another generic WWII/modern RTS. And there's going to be a lot more guns than AoE III has, but maybe the Imperial Age will become nothing but drone strikes.

If we had to get another fictional setting with AoE II mechanics, I honestly wanna see the Horus Heresy.
