That's true, and I honestly feel that was almost entirely due to the social media physics wackiness that BotW brought. Aonuma and Fujibayashi probably thought that people would love to interact with a more complex system due to everything they saw. They, unfortunately, just put too much effort into refining it at the expense of many other aspects of the game which clearly didn't go over well with many people.
