It's a reference to Problem Sleuth, the first big webcomic by Andrew Hussie. I strongly recommend reading it, because unlike Homestuck it's short, consistently good and sticks the landing, plus Toby Fox cribbed many things from it for Deltarune. Anyway, it had a running gag where every weapon had an innocuous alternative form (revolver/key, tommygun/ring of keys, machine gun/hairpin etc.) and they switched between two forms at the most inopportune times. Yes, there was a sword that turned into a writing implement too.
