my girlfriend is on instagram all day and she parroted some influencer's opinion that this was censorship and the death of free speech, etc. I had to explain that no, the Trump administration did not cancel Colbert's show, that he was tanking in the ratings, and CBS were the ones that gave the order to let him go. It's not like the government came in and shut him down.
She didn't know about their merger or the fact that they needed FCC approval, or the fact that CBS had just settled a defamation lawsuit with Trump. Like if I worked for a company and they got sued for defamation, and I kept on defaming the same guy publicly, they would have a right to terminate me as an employee so they don't get sued again.
Honestly CBS must have been so happy when Colbert immediately started talking shit right after the lawsuit because it gave them an excuse to drop a show that was losing money.
