I'm 39, The Tonight Show was family favorite viewing in America before streaming and all the rest of it. Carson would bring entertaining people on. Special interests, celebrities; there was also a lot of gags and routines they kept returning to. Ferguson emulated this format very effectively in his Late Show.
Carson was enjoyable because he was a very gracious man who could be funny, but he knew when he was bringing guests on, the focus was on the guest. With Colbert, it was all politics. Colbert was the star, and he brought on a bunch of grumpy liberal guests that were not telegenic in the least. They were there to burnish his progressive creds and throw red meat (blue meat?) to the crowd.
