He's got the same problems as Atsuro from Devil Survivor. There just aren't enough decent physical skills in DDS to justify having a physical specialist when the well-rounded main character can use the one or two you want just fine. At least Heat and Atsuro are there with you from the beginning. Roland doesn't join until you already have a comfortable party setup and leaves like two dungeons later.
