It's kind of a like boiling a frog slowly. By the time a woman has become clearly old her husband likely has spent a decade and a half with her and still loves her through their long term bond and emotional attatchment. When people say that love and attraction can bypass looks it's not just a cope, it's an actual physiological reality. The husband hating his wife is a very boomer and gen x thing and is reflective of the cultural attitudes during that time around marriage. Gay relationships on the other hand do seem to be more dependent on physical attraction and I have often seen irl gay couples have an age gap which causes them to go seperate ways by the time the older guy hits his 50s, and when the age gap is balanced they seem more open to non-monogamous to fullfill their sexual needs when they reach early middle age while being around eachother for emotional company. There is an incompleteness there which I have found with heterosexual married couples to not really suffer from that often unlike homosexual ones.
