My strategy is to conquer three cities at once with my death stack 10 units of 1000 EXP troops. Recover the morale, and then do it again. Garrison a couple of shitty troops in the front line cities to delay their advance.
The strategy is to conquer their cities faster than they conquer yours. You can cancel falling back every time you conquer one city but keep attacking another one with morale penalty for attacking more than twice. The AI will only send one and maybe two armies at best to the front line.
