It is how most humans work. Our brains go:

At a core fundamental level. Of course the vast majority of people are fairly open minded. If you explain something to them they'd understand it. They may be confused on the appeal or why you like it, but they'd understand and be decently respectful. However, there are some that are not like this and those are the most vocal.
So if you say 'I like Azur Lane', most people won't know what you mean or will care, a few might know, and then you have one or two assholes shouting back 'SHUT UP DWEEB' because they don't recognize what you said so they need validation for themselves.
But if you say 'I like Dragon Ball Z', most people will know what you mean (even if most still don't care), quite a few will shout back 'HELL YEAH', 'IT'S OVER 9000', 'TRUNKS IS THE BEST!', and then you have one or two assholes shouting back 'SHUT UP DWEEB' but they are drowned out by the crowd and may even realize they are being assholes because of this.
