Oldfags don't really travel. They'll fly straight to their chosen destination and settle in someplace comfy. Maybe rent a car and take an excursion now and then when they want a change of scenery. my uncle (widowed, adult kids) started solo traveling like 8y ago
I kinda motivated him, as I was solo traveling a lot during that time (university)

you travel a bit differently with age though
like he won't take a shitty night bus just because it's a few € cheaper than flying
and he changes cities less often
generally more relaxed, no clubs or busy bars

he also somehow always meets other retired, local 50s dudes
seems to be easier to socialize (or just his personality idk)
literally, second day after arrival and he always already found a group to go drinking in the evening
last year he was in China, knows like 10words Mandarin, but second day, some backwater city, he posts a photo getting drunk with old chinese guys in a park (teahouse?), and one of those was the fucking vice mayor

Maybe I'm too old for travel. I forgot to turn in my key and had to run 2 km back to the hotel to return it and then run back to catch my bus on time. Over a week later, my knees are still popping after climbing stairs. They say lonely living ages you much faster than normal social living. Seems they're right.

Still have people I can holiday with but those are going to be rare trips. I need to get my shit together and try to figure out how to travel alone and not have this happen for bigger, more expensive trips. Maybe try some trips to museums and historical buildings, ones with no memories attached.

42 here, non-coomer. I go to Thailand every Winter for at least 8 weeks and don't intend to stop. I'm not saving for retirement, have no pension. I do look way younger than my age but don't feel it. I'm not chasing young Thai girls or nighclubbing because it's fucking sad. I do spend a lot of time alone and get bored and lonely a lot when travelling. I aways manage to pick up a loose hippy slut or 2 though. I see lots of guys way older than me travelling alone. Usually either blatant mongers or washed up stoner hippy types. That is kind of cringe actually.

Without wife or kids at my age you might as well just save money to spend on experiences like travel. Hope to God I don't live another 42 years, I can't imagine the ordeal of it

I think the answers to these questions are “fewer people than you think,” “only if they slag you off to your face, which they basically don’t ever do,” and “I care not at all because I’m not an insecure weirdo.”

I travel solo fairly frequently on short trips, even though I’m old and male and have one of the aforementioned families that someone thinks a man needs by 26, although that seems kind of young to me.

I go solo to places my family members don’t like (I like post-Communist shitholes), or when they’re not free to come with, like when the wife and kids are away themselves for work and/or school trips, or visiting relatives I don’t want to hang out with. I do it for my own enjoyment and to enrich my life, not to impress strangers.

If all you see in Malta is kids trying to get drunk and laid, you’re just in the wrong parts of Malta. Malta has history and prehistory for days, plenty to offer an older solo traveler. And along with offering some of the world’s oldest standing Neolithic structures, pretty much the whole island of Gozo is devoid of party children. Peak comfy, maybe a little dull.

Am I just fucked if I'm an "old soul" type zoomer? I am here abroad in SEA but feel similar to the oldfags in my low desire to run around navigating ghetto bus trips and weird hostels, but I've always been lonely and non social, so like the other guy above said, I genuinely sometimes feel like I'm 10 years above my actual age.
