Solid throuple is alright as the other anon said, but these sort of things require at least one group member to be completely secure in themselves, ideally two or three secure people however.
Usually if you don't want it to just be a relationship+1 you need to be comfortable dedicating large amounts of time to each other. This makes it less feasible to have the same amount of free time as when you were just a pair.
So it summary it does work but it usually involves lots of weird little concessions or dynamics that prevent it from being a full triangle rather than just two points that are connected to a third.
