He's an Amalgamate of some kind I'm guessing. Though his possible connection to the Shadow Mantle and the idea of having to "cloak yourself in darkness" might mean something like the FRIEND is a literal manifestation of darkness. I think personally he might be some kind of counterpart to the human soul, able to "radiate darkness" the way the human soul can "radiate light."
