tl;dr its a scalable solution depending on how much we want to be a nuisance for players.
Each continent will be split from running with 1 thread each to 6 threads each which means more players.
There is a "phase" on that boundary where you're transferred to another thread. It isn't layering, just splitting up.
So using Kalimdor as a reference the zones are grouped as follows:
North: Azshara, Ashenvale, Felwood, Darkshore, Teldrassil, Moonglade, Winterspring
Middle: Durotar, Barrens, Stonetalon, Desolace, Dustwallow
South: Thousand Needles, Silithus, Ungoro, Tanaris, Feralas
And then each 1 to 5 zone is also split off.
We want as few of those transitions as possible, but the more there are the more players we can support.
I don't want to but if things genuinely do start hitting 5k to 10k+ we may have to basically split off each zone so that cpu threads can go brrrrrr.
