Kaytotes and his team initally talked about a round robin system, that would allocate time slots to players. it was meme'd about here for a day or so, the reception from the discord was so overwhelmingly negative he had to address it in an update assuring players he wouldn't do anything they weren't comfortable with.

Chests should be locked.
Chests should spawn with an associated mob attached to them that holds the key.
Killing that mob should drop the key.
The key could technically work on any chest in the open world, but making hundreds of key items sounds cancer.
The key should have a five minute duration, so it can only realistically be used on the chest right infront of you.
Chests should have better rewards in them than 3 apples and a light leather.
This would stop 'people' stealing chests whilst you're in combat nearby. And be quite immersive and fun.
