It was very obviously about subverting expectations. Lefties love doing that. Tease that guy and gal may get together, follow up with gay shit. Lower Drecks got canceled because the writers got too cocky and thought they can pretend to be Rian Johnson. But when your show is extremely niche (and kept afloat by schizo shippers) you can't afford to be divisive.
